Scout-led American flag retirement ceremony in Longwood and Oviedo with Erik Swenk

Flag Retirement Ceremonies

June 14, 2025•1 min read

On June 14, National Flag Day, I helped coordinate two flag retirement ceremonies with the Seminole District of Scouting America — one at Reiter Park in Longwood and one at American Legion Memorial Post 243 in Oviedo. This followed our inaugural ceremony the prior year at Sanford City Hall. More than 50 Scouts participated again this year.

These ceremonies were part of a council-wide Flag Day effort across Central Florida. The vision was a Scouting-hosted, community-facing event that remains solemn and respectful while teaching when and how to retire American flags. Experienced units help newer units learn — so those teams can lead their own local ceremonies throughout the year.

That model is already working. Scouts from Oviedo units returned to Post 243 for another ceremony in July, with more planned through the year.

As an Eagle Scout who grew up in the program, I never set out to become a Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, or district vice chair. When asked to serve, I said yes — and looked for ways to strengthen character and leadership for Seminole County youth. Helping restore this tradition locally is one of those ways.
